Why? Because I've been trying to lose a few pounds to get my power/weight ratio a bit more in my favor. The hills are where I struggle, so this should serve as a big boost in my corner. But how do you lose weight? You eat less. My coach and I have been very careful to select exactly what I eliminate from my diet on the endurance and rest days to create the needed calorie deficit, and an emphasis has been placed on eating when I need to eat: the hard days.
Nonetheless, while the pounds are coming off (yay!), the power is also backing off a bit as well. The past 2 attempts at AT interval workouts have been less than stellar. My group ride last night wasn't so fantastic. Then again, I had my best race yet of the season, but how much of it was due to smarter riding and how much of it was due to physical improvement can't really be quantified. The up? Lower number on the scale. The down? Perhaps less of a physical edge.
I know that this is a danger when trying to lose weight AND train simultaneously. Weight loss, oddly enough, is best done during the off season, since you never really tap into your muscle glycogen and can safely eat a little less while riding a little more. Cross and weight training make sure that it comes off as fat, not muscle. I also don't know 100% why my performance hasn't been as sharp. The group ride came after an AT interval workout and it was 97 degrees outside. The ATs are perhaps a little lower than before because it's been so long since I've consistently done them, longer than I thought. Then again, I could just be making excuses for myself, as I'm so apt to do.
Saddle wise, it's not going so great either. My beloved SaddleCo Flow has, finally, given me the painful saddle sores everyone said it would. While the hammock part is amazing, the plastic edge digs into me so badly that it's becoming hard to ride. I'm currently borrowing an old Avocet Turbo, which is great for my sores because of the long transition area on the sides. But. It is a crotch hatchet. It has to go.
I'm going to give the Topeak Allay Racing a shot, see if perhaps that's going to be the magic combination. It's not sexy. By any means. But. It gives me support on my ass and supports my lady parts on literally an adjustable cushion of air. I saw it at Interbike last year and was very intrigued by it, so we'll see.
Right now, though, I'm sick of the rollers. I would love a nice, flat stretch to cruise on for a bit.
